Appliance Repair Technician Pay Calculator

Not every technician needs the same pay formula. An experienced closer may be paid from completed-job margin, while a helper or trainee may be paid for recorded hours on assigned work.

Use this calculator to compare both methods for the same period. It follows the operational example used by Taskrol: job margin equals collected payments minus parts cost and tax. Your company can use different accounting or compensation rules.

Margin-percentage formula

Example operational formula: margin = collected job payments − parts cost − tax. Technician pay = eligible completed-job margin × technician percentage.

A margin formula can connect compensation to profitable completed work, but the company must define which jobs, payments, refunds, callbacks, expenses, and adjustments are eligible.

Hourly formula

Hourly technician pay = recorded work-session hours × hourly rate. In Taskrol, time is recorded on the assigned job with start and stop controls. On My Way or ETA can start a session, and completing the work stops the timer.

This is job-session time tracking, not continuous GPS surveillance. Only technicians using the hourly pay mode need those sessions for this calculation.

Questions to settle before choosing a method

  • Is pay based on collected payments or invoiced revenue?
  • Which parts costs, tax, refunds, discounts, and card fees reduce margin?
  • Do warranty callbacks count as new eligible work?
  • When does a job become closed and payable?
  • How are travel, training, meetings, overtime, and non-job time handled?
  • Which employment and wage rules apply to the technician's classification and location?

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate technician pay from job margin?

Using this example, subtract parts cost and tax from collected job payments, then multiply the remaining margin by the technician percentage. Your company should document its exact eligible-job and margin rules.

How is hourly technician pay calculated?

Multiply recorded work-session hours by the technician's hourly rate. Payroll processing may also need overtime, non-job time, taxes, deductions, and other rules not covered by this calculator.

Can different technicians use different pay methods in Taskrol?

Yes. Each technician can use either margin-based pay or an hourly rate, so different roles do not have to share one formula.

Does every technician need to run the job timer?

No. Recorded job sessions are used for hourly calculations. A technician paid from completed-job margin does not need hourly sessions for that pay mode.

Does this calculator replace payroll software?

No. It compares two operational calculations only. The business remains responsible for payroll processing, taxes, wage rules, classifications, and accounting.
